It prefers clear water and counter-current zones of rapids and creeks with a rocky bottom. It is a gregarious schooling fish whose bright colours make it a sought-after aquarium fish. Its diet consists of small invertebrates, insects and plant matter. The species is harmless to humans and, because of its small size, of no fishery value.
