Marlier's julie is a rock-dwelling cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The species grows to about 13 cm and has an elongate, pale body with a striking black, checkered network pattern. They are typical rock dwellers that never come to the surface or far into open water, staying among rock crevices. They graze aufwuchs: algae and small invertebrates living on the rocks. The species is hardy, peaceful and forms monogamous pairs that lay and guard their brood in crevices and caves. Marlier's julie is popular in the aquarium.
