Description
The Malagarasi river cichlid is a cichlid from the Malagarasi drainage in East Africa. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a streamlined, elongate body, adapted to life in flowing river water. It is essentially a riverine fish with a tendency to colonise quieter waters, often near reed beds and stones. As an omnivore it searches the bottom for growth, small invertebrates and detritus. Cichlids show brood care; riverine Orthochromis species are usually mouthbrooders. Owing to a restricted range and threats to its habitat the species is listed as Vulnerable (VU). It is harmless to humans.
