Description
The frontosa is a large, stately cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The species grows to about 33 cm and has a deep, blue-white body with five to seven broad black crossbars; old individuals develop a prominent nuchal hump. It is a rock dweller that often stays in groups at greater depth. As an omnivore and nocturnal hunter it feeds on shellfish such as snails and mussels and on fishes, including other cichlids that are inactive at night. The frontosa is a maternal mouthbrooder and a much-loved aquarium fish. It is harmless to humans.
