Description

Herwig's skate is a true skate (Rajidae) of the continental slope in the eastern Atlantic off the coast of West Africa. The species grows to about 60 cm and has a flat, diamond-shaped disc with a pointed snout and a prickly back and tail. As a bottom-dweller it lies half-buried on sand and mud and searches for crustaceans, molluscs and small fish. It reproduces with egg cases ('mermaid's purses'). The fish is harmless to humans.
