Description

Hemigrammus orthus is a minute characin from fresh water of northern South America, including the Amazon region. The species reaches only about 3 cm and has a slender, silvery, partly translucent body with fine markings. It schools in clear, slow streams and pools among water plants and feeds on small zooplankton, insect larvae and algae. The fish is harmless to humans and appears in the aquarium hobby. The IUCN has not evaluated the species.
