Description
The Gulf gambusia is a small livebearing fish of the family Poeciliidae from northeastern Mexico. The species reaches only about 4.5 cm and has an elongate little body with an upward-pointing mouth and a fine dark lengthwise marking. It inhabits flowing waters such as rivers and streams and adjacent standing waters, preferring deeper parts of a metre or more. There it hunts mosquito larvae and other small invertebrates. Females give birth to live young. The species is harmless to humans.
