The keeltail needlefish is a needlefish (family Belonidae) occurring worldwide in tropical oceans. The species grows to about 50 cm and has a very elongate, silvery-green body with a long, thin beak full of small, sharp teeth and a keeled caudal peduncle that gives it its name. It occurs oceanically and is particularly abundant around islands, where it schools in sheltered parts of the reef. Its diet consists mainly of small fishes. The species is oviparous and of value to subsistence fisheries. It can leap from the water when disturbed, the beak potentially causing injury.
