Description

Bathybates ferox is a slender, pelagic predatory cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. The species has a streamlined, silvery body with dark spots or stripes and a large mouth, and reaches about 38 cm. Unlike most cichlids, which live near the bottom, this species roams the open water of the lake, alone or in schools, and hunts mainly the abundant freshwater sardines (clupeids) of Lake Tanganyika. It sometimes also occurs along rocky coasts. Owing to its size and co-occurrence with the sardine fishery the species is important for fisheries and a valued food fish.
