Description

The diagramma cichlid is a cichlid of the family Cichlidae endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, reaching about 20 cm. The sturdy, yellow-brown body bears distinct vertical bars and a bluish sheen; males are more vividly coloured. With its broad, inferior mouth it grazes filamentous algae and growth off the rocks as a plant-eater in shallow shore zones - a typical algae-eater of the rocky littoral. It is strongly territorial and defends a grazing patch. Like many cichlids of the lake it is a mouthbrooder: the female broods the eggs and young in her mouth. The species belongs to the rich cichlid fauna that arose in the lake and is sought after by specialist aquarium keepers.
