Description
The cupid cichlid is a small South American cichlid from the Amazon and Orinoco basins. The species grows to about 12 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with a dark flank spot and an oblique band over the eye. It inhabits quiet, often sandy parts of rivers and creeks. As a sand-sifting cichlid it takes mouthfuls of sand and sifts out small invertebrates, insect larvae and plant matter. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder. The cupid cichlid is a peaceful aquarium fish. Owing to its modest size it is harmless to humans.
