Description
The convict cichlid is a small, robust cichlid from Central America. The species grows to about 10 cm and has a grey-blue body with eight dark vertical bars, to which the scientific name (nigrofasciata) refers. It inhabits flowing water, from small creeks to the shallows of large, fast-flowing rivers, and seeks shelter in rock cracks and crevices. As an omnivore it eats invertebrates, algae and detritus. The species is known for its pronounced brood care and strongly territorial behaviour. It is very popular in the aquarium and is harmless to humans.
