Description

The California tonguefish is a small flatfish of the tonguefish family (Cynoglossidae) from the eastern Pacific. The species grows to about 21 cm and has an elongate, tongue-shaped, tapering body with both eyes on the left side and a dark tail, to which the name refers; dorsal, tail and anal fins run into one another. It lives on sand and mud bottoms of coastal waters, where it hides half-buried. As a bottom hunter it feeds on small crustaceans, worms and other small bottom animals. Owing to its camouflaged habits it is little noticed. The species is harmless to humans.
