Description
The Nicaragua cichlid is a cichlid (Cichlidae) from Central America. The species has a deep body with a handsome yellow-blue sheen and a row of dark spots on the flank; courting animals colour up strongly. It inhabits lakes and rivers with slow to moderate currents, from lowland to about 200 m elevation. As an omnivore it feeds on snails, small invertebrates, plant matter and detritus. It forms pairs and is a caring, biparental brood-tender. It is popular with aquarists and is harmless to humans.
