Description
The broadhead flathead is a flathead (Platycephalidae) from the Indo-West Pacific. The species reaches about 37 cm and has an elongate body with a broad, strongly flattened head and a large, upturned mouth. It lives on sand near rocks and coral reefs, to about 30 m deep, and partially buries itself in the sand for camouflage. From there it lunges as an ambush predator at crabs, prawns and small fishes. Through its sand-coloured, mottled pattern it blends almost completely into the bottom and is little noticed. The species has no market value.
