The species grows to about 70 cm and has a strongly flattened head and an elongate, sand-coloured body that camouflages it on the bottom. It lives on the continental shelf and upper slope at considerable depth. As an ambush predator it lies half-buried and seizes passing fishes, crustaceans and squid.
