Description
The Mexican blind cavefish is a characin (Characidae) from underground cave waters in northeastern Mexico. The species is pinkish-white and pigmentless and lacks functional eyes, an adaptation to life in complete darkness; it recently evolved from the surface form Astyanax mexicanus. With its lateral-line system and sense of smell it probes its surroundings. It feeds on organic matter, detritus and small invertebrates. Owing to a very limited range it is considered endangered. It is harmless to humans.
