Description
The blackgullet cichlid is a Central American cichlid from the Pacific slope of southern Mexico to El Salvador. The species grows to about 25 cm and has a deep, pearl-grey to yellowish body with a few dark blotches. It inhabits rivers, lakes and pools with slow-flowing water. As a bottom-oriented omnivore it searches the bottom for small invertebrates, insect larvae, detritus and plant matter. Cichlids show intensive brood care and lay their eggs on a cleaned surface, guarded by both parents; the breeding season runs from April to August. The species is a local food fish and is harmless to humans.
