Description
The basa catfish is a large shark catfish (Pangasiidae) from the Mekong and Chao Phraya basins in Southeast Asia. The species grows to about 1.2 metres and has a streamlined, greyish body with a high dorsal fin and two pairs of barbels. As an omnivore it lives in large rivers and eats plant material, fruit, invertebrates and small fish. It is a very important aquaculture fish traded worldwide as 'basa' or 'pangasius'. The fish is harmless to humans.
