Description
The altum angelfish is a tall, disc-shaped cichlid from blackwater rivers of the Orinoco and upper Rio Negro region of South America. The species grows to about 18 cm but is much taller due to its strongly elongate, sail-like dorsal and anal fins, and has a silvery body with brown-red vertical bars. Among overhanging roots and plants of slow rivers it hunts small invertebrates and small fish. It forms pairs and guards the eggs. The fish is harmless to humans and is prized in the aquarium trade.
