Description
The Maria cichlid is a cichlid endemic to the Barombi Mbo crater lake in Cameroon. The species has a streamlined body. It prefers the more open parts of the lake and is a roaming, fast-swimming species. It feeds on small invertebrates, insects and small fishes. It is a maternal mouthbrooder: the female incubates the eggs and larvae in her mouth. Owing to its very small range and threats to the crater lake the species is considered critically endangered. It is harmless to humans.
