The species grows to about 30 cm and has a slender, strongly laterally compressed, silvery body with a sharply upturned, superior mouth and yellowish fins. As a fast predator of open water it hunts small fish, shrimp and insects in schools. It is locally a food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
