Description
Agassiz's dragonet is a bottom fish of the dragonet family (Callionymidae) from the western Atlantic. The species grows to about 24 cm and has a flattened body with a broad head, large eyes and, in the male, a tall, colourful first dorsal fin. It lives on mud and sand bottoms of the continental shelf and slope. Unlike some related fishes this species has no venom gland or venom groove at the opercular spine. As a bottom searcher it feeds on small invertebrates picked from the sediment. Owing to its inconspicuous, camouflaged habits it is little noticed. The species is harmless to humans.
