Description

The Chinese spinybarb is a cyprinid (Cyprinidae) from clear, flowing rivers and mountain lakes of southern China. The species grows to about 30 cm and has an elongate, silvery body with large scales, two pairs of barbels and a stout, serrated spine at the front of the dorsal fin. As a social omnivore it swims through fast-flowing water and eats algae, water plants, insect larvae and small invertebrates. It is locally a valued food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
