Description

The small-scaled nothobranch is an annual killifish of the family Nothobranchiidae from the coastal plain of East Africa, in Kenya and Somalia. The species reaches about 8 cm and has, unlike most relatives, strikingly small scales; the males are colourful. It lives in temporary pools that dry out in the dry season. As an annual fish the bottom-laid eggs survive the dry period in the mud and hatch after about three months. Through loss and degradation of its habitat the species is assessed by the IUCN as vulnerable (VU); in the aquarium it is difficult to keep.
