Description
The sucker barb is a cyprinid from Southeast Asia. The species grows to about 31 cm and has a streamlined, silvery body with an inferior mouth with fleshy lips and barbels, adapted to grazing the bottom. It occurs mainly in medium to large rivers with flowing water. As a bottom searcher it scrapes and sucks growth, algae, small invertebrates and detritus from stones and the bottom. The sucker barb is a locally valued food fish. It is harmless to humans.
