Description

Orestias agassizii is a pupfish (family Cyprinodontidae) of the Andean highlands. The species reaches about 7 cm and has a stocky body with an upward-directed mouth; like all Orestias species it lacks pelvic fins. It lives in Lake Titicaca and surrounding waters of Peru and Bolivia, at high altitude. Its diet consists of small zooplankton, insect larvae and small invertebrates. Unlike many killifish it is not a seasonal species, and it is considered difficult to keep in an aquarium. The species is of local fishery value and is eaten in the Andes.
