Description
The longfin notothen is a notothen (Nototheniidae) from the cold waters off the coast of Chile in southern South America. The species is a bottom fish with a stocky body, a large head and relatively long fins, to which the name refers. Like other notothens it is adapted to cold water and lacks a swim bladder, so it lives on the bottom. It inhabits rocky and sandy coastal bottoms, where it forages on small crustaceans, worms and other invertebrates. The species is harmless to humans.
