Description

The Nikko loach is a small stone loach (Nemacheilidae) endemic to fresh water of northern Japan. The species grows to about 8 cm and has an elongate, yellow-brown body with barbels and fine dark markings. As a bottom-dweller it lives in cool, clear streams, ponds and swamps and searches for small invertebrates, larvae and detritus. The fish is harmless to humans.
