Description
The silver barb or Java barb is a cyprinid (Cyprinidae) from Southeast Asia. The species has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with yellowish fins and grows to several decimetres. It lives from midwater to the bottom in rivers, streams, floodplains and sometimes reservoirs, and prefers standing water. As an omnivore it feeds on aquatic plants, algae, fruits and small invertebrates. It is an important farmed and food fish. The species is harmless to humans.
