Description

The ashy darter is a small perch relative (Percidae) from clear, flowing rivers of the southeastern United States. The species grows to about 8 cm and has a slender, ash-grey body with fine dark markings; courting males develop blue and orange tints. With small pelvic fins it 'hops' over the bottom in short bursts. As a bottom-dweller it shelters among gravel and stones and picks insect larvae and small invertebrates. The fish is harmless to humans.
