Description
Aphyosemion elegans is a small, colourful killifish of the family Nothobranchiidae from the Congo basin in Central Africa. The species reaches only about 5 cm; the males are handsomely coloured with red and blue-green hues, while the females are plainer. It inhabits brooks, swampy parts of small streams, swamps, pools and shoreline zones of lakes. It is not a seasonal killifish. As an omnivore it feeds on small invertebrates and insect larvae. Owing to its vivid colours the species is prized by killifish enthusiasts, though it is difficult to keep in the aquarium. It has no fishery value because of its small size.
