Adults live on mud bottoms and move into deeper water in winter. The fish is known for producing large amounts of slime, which can cover other fishes when caught in trawls. Its diet consists of bottom invertebrates such as worms and small crustaceans. The species is of commercial importance and is marketed as fillet.
