Description
The sixbar grouper is a grouper of the family Serranidae from the western Pacific. The species grows to about 40 cm and has a pale body with six broad, dark crossbars, to which the name refers. Unlike most groupers it prefers soft bottoms: it is common on silty sand and mud bottoms, often away from the actual reefs. As an ambush predator it feeds on small fishes, crustaceans and molluscs. Like many groupers it is probably a protogynous hermaphrodite. The sixbar grouper is a valued food fish and is harmless to humans.
