Description

The Chinese icefish is a small, almost transparent fish of the family Salangidae from East Asia. The species reaches about 16 cm and has a slender, glassy body that is virtually colourless in life, so the internal organs are visible. It is euryhaline and occurs in coastal waters, estuaries and the lower reaches of rivers of China and surrounding areas. The diet consists of zooplankton and small invertebrates. The species is regularly eaten and is a valued, often dried delicacy. Owing to its fragile build it is sensitive to changes in water quality.
