Description
The blackstripe topminnow (Fundulus notatus) is a small killifish of the family Fundulidae from central North America. The species has a slender, silvery body with a broad, black lengthwise stripe from snout to tail and an upward-pointing mouth, and reaches about 8 cm. It stays at the surface of quiet water, usually along the margins of creeks, small rivers, ponds and lakes. As a surface hunter it feeds mainly on terrestrial arthropods that fall onto the water, supplemented with small aquatic invertebrates. Owing to its small size the species has no fishery value, but it is sometimes used as bait.
