It lives in temporary pools in floodplains, rice fields, swamps, ditches and small streams, often near vegetated edges. It is a true seasonal fish: the eggs survive the dry period in the soil and hatch once the pools fill again. Its diet consists of insect larvae and small invertebrates. The species is harmless to humans and is popular in the killifish hobby.
