Description
The freckled driftfish is a fish of the driftfish family (Nomeidae) from the open ocean worldwide. The species grows to about 23 cm and has a stocky, silvery to brownish body that sometimes shows a freckled pattern. Juveniles live pelagically and like to stay under floating weeds, jellyfishes and flotsam, which provide shelter and transport. As an omnivore it feeds on zooplankton, jellyfishes and small invertebrates. With growth adults move to deeper layers. Owing to its life on the open sea the species is little seen and is harmless to humans.
