Description
The barreleye is an extraordinarily remarkable deep-sea fish (Opisthoproctidae) from the twilight zone of the northern Pacific. The species grows to about 15 cm and has a transparent, fluid-filled dome on top of the head, containing a pair of tubular, upward-pointing eyes that can even rotate forward. In the deep, dark water it gazes upward at the silhouettes of prey and snaps at small zooplankton. The fish is harmless to humans.
