Description

The largescaled terapon is a fish of the family Terapontidae (grunters) widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific. The species has a streamlined, silvery body with three to four dark lateral stripes and reaches about 30 cm. Adults live in coastal waters and often in brackish water; juveniles drift with floating weeds, sometimes far offshore. With its swim bladder the species can produce grunting sounds. The male guards and fans the eggs. The fish is of modest commercial importance and is marketed fresh.
