The species has a streamlined, silvery body with conspicuously small scales and can reach about 92 cm. It lives over mud and sand bottoms in river mouths and in the sea, from the coastline to about 30 metres deep. The diet consists of fishes and shrimps. The species is a valued food fish marketed mostly fresh and fished commercially. Like other drums it can produce drumming sounds with its swim bladder.
