Description
The Goulding's piranha is a piranha (Serrasalmidae) from fresh water of the Amazon and Orinoco basins in South America. The species grows to about 30 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, silvery body with a powerful lower jaw full of sharp, triangular teeth. The body is silvery with a dark cast and a red to orange throat. It hunts and scavenges in shoals on fish, insects and pieces of flesh. When handled carelessly or cornered it can give a fierce, slicing bite; handle caught animals with care.
