Description

The glasshead barreleye is a remarkable deep-sea fish from temperate and tropical oceans. The species grows to about 16 cm and has a transparent, fluid-filled dome on top of the head containing two upward-directed tubular eyes; it also has lateral mirror-eyes to capture light from the side. Thus it watches in the gloom for the silhouettes of prey above. It lives in the deep open water and eats small zooplankton. The fish is harmless to humans and has not been evaluated by the IUCN (NE).
