Description

The checked goby is a small goby (Gobiidae) from fresh and brackish water of southern and eastern Africa. The species grows to about 6 cm and has a stocky, pale-brown body with a checked pattern of dark blotches and, in males, a fairly large mouth. As a bottom-dweller it lives in lower river reaches, estuaries and coastal pools and snaps at small crustaceans, worms and algae. The fish is harmless to humans.
