Description

The painted notothen is a small notothenioid fish of the family Nototheniidae from the cold waters of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic islands. The species grows to about 24 cm and has a stocky, mottled body. It lives on and above the bottom of the continental shelf. As a bottom and midwater searcher it feeds mainly on krill, hyperiid amphipods and mysids. Spawning occurs in the southern winter. Like other icefishes it is adapted to the ice-cold water. The species is an important prey fish and is harmless to humans.
