Description
The yellowbelly rockcod is an Antarctic notothen (Nototheniidae) from the icy coastal waters around Antarctica and the southern islands. The species grows to about 45 cm and has a stocky, brown-grey body with a yellowish belly. Thanks to antifreeze compounds in its blood it tolerates temperatures around freezing. As a bottom-oriented omnivore it lives among rocks and weed of the shallow sublittoral and eats crustaceans, molluscs, weed and small fish. It is a food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
