The Moenkhausia tetra (Moenkhausia hemigrammoides) is a freshwater fish of the family Characidae that grows up to 4 cm.
Description
Moenkhausia hemigrammoides is a small tetra (family Characidae) of northern South America. The species reaches only about 4 cm and has a streamlined, silvery body with bright accents and usually a spot on the caudal peduncle. It prefers clear water and counter-current zones of rapids and creeks with a rocky bottom. It is a gregarious schooling fish whose bright colours make it a sought-after aquarium fish. Its diet consists of small invertebrates, insects and plant matter. The species is harmless to humans and, because of its small size, of no fishery value.
