Description
The Mergui grunt is a grunter (Hapalogenyidae) from shallow coastal and reef water of the Indo-West Pacific. The species grows to about 25 cm and has a deep, laterally compressed, brown-grey body with dark oblique bands, thick lips and small barbels under the chin. As a nocturnal fish it shelters by day at reef and wrecks and searches at night over sand and mud for worms, small crustaceans and molluscs. It is a valued food fish. The fish is harmless to humans.
