Description

The rock cod is a cod-like fish of the morid cod family (Moridae) from the temperate waters of southern Australia and New Zealand. The species has a stocky, red-brown body with a small chin barbel. It is a benthic species of the continental shelf and inshore waters, often sheltering in caves and beneath ledges. As a bottom predator it feeds on crustaceans, fishes and worms. It is a local food fish and is harmless to humans.
