Description
The lobelip notothen is an Antarctic notothen (Nototheniidae) from cold waters around subantarctic islands, such as Marion and the Prince Edward Islands. The species grows to about 20 cm and has a stocky, brown-grey body with a large head and fleshy lips. Adapted to icy water with natural antifreeze compounds in the blood, it lives on the bottom and snaps at small crustaceans, worms and molluscs. The fish is harmless to humans.
